We use all manufacture minimum safety regulations for brake wear, but here are some warning signs to look out for as a driver that your brakes may be in trouble:

  1. Squealing/squeaking noises: This could be your brake wear indicators letting you know that it’s time to get your brake pads replaced.
  2. Grinding noises: If you are hearing grinding noises, it’s important for you to get your brakes checked right away. This is generally the brake pad or shoe scraping against metal contact points.
  3. Wobbling or vibration when braking: If your vehicle or steering wheel vibrates when you are braking, this could mean that the thickness of your rotor is uneven. While uneven rotor wear occurs during use, if left uneven the pad material will continue to build up on those uneven spots, making the problem worse over time.
  4. Leaking fluid: Brake fluid is an essential part of your braking system. If your vehicle has no brake fluid, you will not be able to stop safely. Ensure to check your brake fluid often and if you suspect a leak bring your vehicle in to Harvest Hills Auto as soon as possible.
  5. No resistance when braking: If you apply your brakes and feel no resistance, or the pedal goes all the way down to the floorboard then this could be indicative of moisture or air in the braking system.

Tips for drivers:

  • Check to see if your brake pads need to be replaced. This can be done on some models by looking through the gaps in your rims or by removing your tire. If your brake pads are below ¼ inch thick, make sure to book a replacement with an auto repair shop soon.
  • Flush your brakes every two years. This will help your brakes work more effectively, and make your internal components work longer.
  • Look ahead while driving and try to avoid unnecessary, late, or heavy braking. This will prevent extreme wear on your brake pads and unexpected repairs.
